Clearances Between Parts

Leave a clearance between separate parts or moving components: MJF and SLS – ≥0.5–1 mm, FDM – 1–2 mm, SLA – ≥0.5 mm. If the gap is too small, the parts will fuse or stick together.

Why clearances are needed

In powder bed technologies, heat spreads into the surrounding powder – parts placed too close together can sinter together. In FDM and SLA, material can stick or supports can remain.

Recommendations

  • For assembled (press-fit) parts – 0.1–0.3 mm, depending on the desired fit and the technology’s accuracy.
  • For freely moving parts – 0.5–1 mm (MJF/SLS), 1–2 mm (FDM).
  • For assemblies printed in one piece (hinges, chains) – ≥0.7 mm.
