Alumide

Alumide is a polyamide filled with aluminium powder (SLS). Parts are stiff, have a metallic look and are easy to machine – suitable for visual and functional prototypes where a metal appearance matters.

When to choose

A good fit when…

  • you need a metal look without the cost of metal
  • you need stiffness and easy machining
When not to

Choose something else when…

  • the part must flex – Alumide is more brittle
Design recommendations

Designing in Alumide

Design guide

Walls

Minimum 0.75 mm (down to 0.5 mm in places). Load-bearing walls – from 1.5–2 mm.

Cavities

Leave at least one 2–3 mm opening in closed cavities to remove powder; several for larger cavities.

Clearances

At least 0.5–1 mm between separate moving parts, so they do not fuse together.

Properties

The aluminium filler gives high stiffness (tensile modulus per datasheet – ~3800 MPa) and a grey metallic look. The surface can be sanded and polished.
