Orientation and Supports

SLA and FDM parts are built with supports – orientation determines surface quality, strength and cost. MJF and SLS need no supports – we choose the orientation during production.

When orientation matters

  • FDM – strength between layers (Z) is lower; we orient load-bearing features along the layer direction.
  • SLA – support marks remain on surfaces in contact with supports; specify the visible surfaces.
  • MJF / SLS – parts are nested throughout the build volume automatically; if orientation matters, note it in the comments.

Overhangs

In FDM, overhangs up to ~45° are usually printed without supports. Steeper ones need supports, which are removed and leave marks.

In the configurator

For FDM and SLA parts you will find “Orientation” – rotate the model or choose “Auto” (minimum height). The final position is confirmed by an engineer.
