Threads and Threaded Inserts

The most durable thread in a 3D printed part is a metal threaded insert, heat-set into a prepared hole. For light loads, the thread can be tapped directly into the plastic; directly printed threads are only suitable for coarse threads (≥M8).

Three methods

Method When
Threaded inserts Screws removed many times, higher loads, M2–M8.
Tapping into plastic Screws rarely removed, low loads.
Printed thread Coarse threads (≥M8), caps, containers.

How to prepare the model for inserts

  • Leave a cylindrical hole as recommended by the insert manufacturer (usually slightly smaller than the insert’s outer diameter).
  • Wall around the insert – at least 1.5–2 mm.
  • In the configurator, select “Threaded inserts” and specify the quantity per part.

Questions and answers

Can you print an M3 thread?

A directly printed M3 thread will not be accurate. We recommend an M3 threaded insert or tapping after production.
