Holes and Openings

The smallest recommended hole for 3D printing is about 1–2 mm in diameter; for precise holes (bushings, shafts), design them slightly smaller and drill or ream them after production.

Hole accuracy

Small holes, especially horizontal ones, often come out slightly smaller or oval. For precise fits we recommend:

  • designing the hole 0.1–0.3 mm larger (depending on the technology’s accuracy), or
  • leaving it smaller and drilling it after production – note this in the comments.

Powder escape holes

In powder bed technologies (MJF, SLS), powder remains trapped in enclosed cavities. Leave at least one 2–3 mm opening (several for larger cavities) so it can be blown out.

Horizontal holes in FDM and SLA

Large horizontal holes may need supports. A teardrop-shaped hole (pointed at the top) can often be printed without supports.
