MJF vs SLS: Which Technology Should You Choose?

MJF and SLS both produce strong nylon parts without supports. MJF is often more cost-effective for series and delivers denser, more isotropic parts; SLS offers a larger build volume (up to 600 mm in height) and more specialty materials (PA11 ESD, Alumide, PA GF).

Similarities

  • Both are powder bed fusion technologies – no supports needed.
  • The core material is PA12 nylon, plus PA11 and TPU.
  • Suitable for functional prototypes and series; accuracy ±0.3 mm or ±0.3 %.

Differences

MJF SLS
Fusion Fusing agent + IR heat Laser
Build volume 380 × 380 × 284 mm 335 × 335 × 600 mm
Part density Nearly 100 %, nearly isotropic Slightly more porous
Surface Matte, slightly rough, gray Smooth, slightly porous
Materials PA12, PA11, PA12 GB, PP, TPU, CB PA12 PA12, PA11, PA11 ESD, Alumide, PA GF, TPU

When to choose MJF

  • Series – tens or hundreds of parts.
  • Maximum strength and isotropy are required.
  • The part fits within 380 × 380 × 284 mm.

When to choose SLS

  • A tall or long part (up to 600 mm).
  • You need ESD, Alumide or PA GF.

Which is cheaper – MJF or SLS?

Usually MJF, especially for series, but it depends on the part geometry and material. The calculator will show you exactly.
