Where the cost differs
Injection molding has a high upfront mold cost and a low unit cost; 3D printing has zero upfront cost and a more constant unit cost. So up to a certain quantity 3D production is cheaper, and above it – molding.
What determines the break-even point
- Part size – large parts are more expensive in 3D production.
- Geometric complexity – a complex shape needs an expensive mold, while for 3D production it makes no difference.
- Likelihood of changes – every design change in molding may require a new mold.
Other advantages of 3D production
- First parts in days, not weeks.
- The design can be changed between batches.
- No inventory needed – parts are made on demand.
